Week in Pictures: Zoo’s new giraffe; spring sports and weather

Signs of spring, including the zoo’s newest birth, Omaha Fashion Week and lots of rainfall are in the World-Herald Week in Pictures: March 19-25, 2012.

The first giraffe born at the Henry Doorly Zoo since 2007 made her debut Friday, a week after her birth on March 16. The female calf was born to Morgan, a 12-year-old female, and Jawara, a 3½-year-old male. Giraffes are usually about 6 feet tall and 150 pounds at birth. A result of recommended breeding through the Species Survival Plan, the calf will stay indoors until she consistently follows and keeps up with her mother. Then she will be introduced slowly to the rest of the herd and eventually to the outdoor exhibit. JAMES R. BURNETT/THE WORLD-HERALD
