Photo showcase: 2011 OWH Year in Pictures — Kent Sievers
I’ve worked as a photojournalist for 34 years, joining The Omaha World-Herald in 2000. Of the 2,000-plus images I submitted for publication in 2011, my favorite came together while covering the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
In 2001, as reports and images of the attacks on the East Coast rolled in, I raced from event to event, failing to capture anything memorable, let alone representative of the attacks’ impact on my community. When I was assigned to cover the Omaha metro’s 9/11 10th anniversary events, I saw it as an opportunity to do better. The first image below came at the beginning of a very emotional 12-hour day. Knowing I had this image in camera made the rest of the day that much more enjoyable.
